Laughter is the best medicine!!

Laughter really is the best medicine…

My kids are very much like their daddy. My Army Man has a way with words…. not just saying them, but reversing order, rhyming, writing, making up games, rearranging sentences, using them out of context on purpose… all sorts of word games!

The other day while we were driving home from church, a conversation started.  I’m not sure who started it, but we’ll blame it on Thoene. He is usually our “fall” guy!  You know that saying, “You’re a few fries short of a Happy Meal”?? It kinda started like that! Except my kids didn’t realize they were slinging insults at each other! They just thought they were saying funny little sayings!!
It. Was. Hilarious!!!

Here are a few of the “funny little sayings”…..
You're.....
A few bricks short of a LEGO set….
A few slices short of a loaf
A few pages short of a chapter
Or how about....
A few seeds short of an apple
A few leaves short of a branch
A few animals short of a zoo
A few watts short of a light bulb (mine)
This one.....?
A few problems short of math schoolbook  (??)
A few chickens short of a flock
A few horses short of a herd
A few books short of a library
A few stars short of the Flag
A few gasses short of a fart
Bahahahahahha
A few days short of a week
A few weeks short of a month
A few months short of a year
A few years short of a millennium
A few gigs short of a hard drive
A few bees short of a hive
Oh yeah, and this one!
A pea short of a casserole
A few pills short of a bottle
A few remotes short of a Wii
A few words short of a dictionary
and
Your marbles slipped out of your bag

I'm sure there were more (we're talking a 20 minute ride home from church!!), but this is all we could remember for me to put in this story!!

By the time we got home I had tears in my eyes from laughing so hard!! Army Man was laughing too, but more on the inside….

Fast forward a day……
I volunteered to watch my friend’s children while she was at an appointment (they LOVE to come to our house and play outside in the woods or inside with the Wii!) (we LOVE having them over!!)  and my kids were trying to explain the conversation from the previous night…

It went something like this….

Truly …. “Like this...You’re a few days short of a week!”  (deadpan)
SG…. “ok…ummmm…you’re a few petals shorter than a flower!”  (triumphant!)
Truly…. “ No, it would be a few petals short OF a flower! Like this…. You’re a few animals short of a zoo!”
SG…. “ok…ummmm you’re a few leaves shorter than a branch!!” (big hopeful smile)
Truly… “No. I don’t think you’re getting it.”
Sg…. “I know!! I’m so confused!!! How about this?? You’re a few petals SHORTER than a flower!!!!" (giggles!)
Truly...."Ummmm, no."

Keep in mind the SG sort of sounds like a chipmunk….. It was SO stinkin’ funny!!!!!
Just go back and re-read that little conversation with the SG words sounding like one of the Chipettes.... Gigglesnorts abound!!!!!

Just another day in the life of me…. laughing my way through the craziness!!!

Blessings!!!

Farm Girl??? Part 3

Yes....this is the third in a series....
Here are the first two if you want to "catch up"... hahahahahahha
>>Part 1<<
>>Part 2<<
I am trying to be as open and honest as I can. I sometimes feel I am really not cut out for the life that I live!!!
Craziness!!!
I am a city girl.... I now live in the boonies. By choice, but not necessarily fitting in with my surroundings!!!!
But the sound of bugs and birds beat the sounds of traffic and sirens any day of the week!!!! This is my sky view from my porch nearly every day (unless it is raining and dreary!!)

It is very pretty where I live and I have no complaints....

ok....maybe I have a few complaints!!!

My sweet daughter….  My almost 13 year old beautiful little girl….
My tenderhearted chicken keeper…. My most capable kitchen helper…..
My mini-me (at least in looks and attitude!!)......  My Truly....

Somehow, in a sense of humor only God could have, I have a daughter that thrills in the hunting of squirrels.  We have always taught her (and her brothers) that if she kills it, she has to eat it.
Not that I have ever, ever (Nope, NEVER!!!!) shot anything for food!!!
Nor do I ever intend to!
As a child and teenager, my Army Man was a hunter.
He no longer enjoys it as he did...

Every single day my daughter asks me if she can go hunting.

Every...

Day....
I had an “excuse” through the summer because it was not “hunting season”, but now that we are in September I no longer have a valid excuse for denying her this.
She LOVES to go out hunting.
I have no idea where this desire comes from!!!
Is it her competitive nature?? Nope!! Don’t think so….Neither of her brothers want to hunt. So she wins every time...
Is it her need for food?? I should think not…. There is plenty of food in this house!!!  I have to feed 3 kids that are 11, 13 (in Oct.), 15 (in Nov.)!!!!!

I just do not understand…..

It is something I have come to accept as a part of her.  She is not like me at all when I was her age. I wanted earrings, new shoes, dresses and makeup for my birthdays, not a new gun, arrows with real tips (for future deer hunting!!) and a large knife!!!!  It’s kinda freaky, but she is who she is and I love her for it!!! She is pretty awesome!!!

After she has shot and cleaned it she then prepares and cooks it herself.

Like I said, she is petty awesome!!!

My oldest son, McCoy,  has always been fascinated with all things lizard….. he is constantly bringing me creepy, scaly things to look at. It seems to me as we have been out on this property  that the things are getting bigger and creepier…..this is an older photo (from Spring 2015), but gives you an idea of things that are thrust into my face almost daily (ok, so he has learned his lesson and no longer thrust them toward me, but it still FEELS like they are thrusted and I shrink back. Every time!!!)... It's no wonder that my hair is turning grey!!! Look at what I have to see!!!!

My barefoot boy…..
My youngest son is by far the least adventurous….
He is always concerned about safety and making people aware of the dangers of our property by telling them about all of the snakes he has seen, the spiders that lurk in the trees, and the many, many thorns he has pulled out of his feet!!!
However, all that caution does not apply to him. Obviously.
He runs about the place bare-footed. All. Year. Long.
So much so, that his running around barefoot combined with an abnormally quick growth spurt when he was nine has caused him to have a condition known as Sever’s Disease. It’s not a disease in the exact definition, but that is the layman’s term for it….
It is called “Calcaneal Apophysitis”. Yeah, that’s why it’s also called Sever’s disease…..
Here is a bit of info on that... >>Heal Pain<<
Over the last year and a half this barefoot lovin’ boy has been in double casts on his feet five times (3 to 6 weeks each time!!)!!!! Five times!!! Can you even imagine how difficult that is for a boy?!?! We went from carefree to be careful overnight!! Because of this issue (which he will have until his heel bones fuse)(somewhere between 12 and 14 years old!) he is forced to wear shoes all the time!!!! Not a big deal if you’re in the city and have to walk on concrete and roads often, but out here in the boonies we have 6.5 acres of grass, woods, creeks and ponds to explore. It has been a very difficult time for my boy….. but he is a fighter!!! He hardly complains unless the pain has become unbearable and still, he tries to run around barefoot!!!

Speaking of spiders..... I have found at least 3 different (I said THREE DIFFERENT!!!!) types of humongous spiders that enjoy our property along with us!!!! =/
GASP!!!!!!
I don't think I have ever been so creeped out by spiders before!!! I'll admit, ALL spiders are somewhat creepy, but these things?!?!  Yikes!!!!  We're talking as big as my hand here!!!
Freeeeeeaky!!!!!

Along with a few other critters.... this "little" guy was about 3 inches long!!!!

Since we do live out in the Boonies now we had to consider getting a larger dog!!
Our Bella, a cute and cuddly Australian Shepherd mix is a great companion, but when it comes to watchdog she is more annoying than scary. We ended up with Aries… you can read the story of how we came to have him here >>Aries' Story<<  and some of his antics here >>Crazy Dog!!<<  but most recently he has been diagnosed with Radial nerve damage in his right shoulder.
This is what I have discovered about it so far....>>Link<<
He had been limping for a few weeks and his right leg muscles have begun to atrophy!!! This is the result of three males fighting an epic battle for dominance with Aries being the smallest and youngest of the three!!!  He is a scrapper and does not know when to cry uncle!!!!   The good news is no bones were broken in battle and there is no infection!!! We took him to the vet because he lost control of his right leg/foot. He was dragging it…..
But he seems to have regained some use of his leg/foot and we continue to give him cortisone tablets (anti-inflammatory) . The bad news is, when we have him rechecked in 4 weeks he needs to show marked improvement. If he does not we have to face a possible amputation to the shoulder. I was in tears at the vet’s office just thinking of our happy-go-lucky boy with only three legs!!!! But the vet assured us that dogs get along just fine with three limbs and should the worst happen he would go on to live a happy healthy life.

I do love where we live!!!
We have much freedom here that we would not have in the city.
I have a beautiful home with a wonderful view, a completely failed garden, and lots of love and laughter.

I couldn't ask for more!!!

Blessings!!!!!

P.S.   My youngest just turned 11 years old!!!!! (11. Years. Old.)
I am feeling old and crippled....
Well, not really, but I do feel like time is flying by!!!!
I don't have many years left with my children here at home so we try to make the most of every day!!!

Here is my baby, Thoene, on his 11th Birthday and his choice in cake.... cheesecake of course!!!

Most Epic of Mom Fails

Oh yes, I know y'all think I am a have-it-all-together, stay-at-home, home-schooling, house cleaning, clothes washing, child raising, photographing, freakishly awesome mom!!!!

Make no mistake..... I am....
....most of the time!!!

Bahahaahhaa

So.....
Today I had to meet my Army Man "in town" briefly, and I thought while I was there I would get the kids a movie from Red Box to have for a movie night tonight!!!

YAY!!!

I was going through the movies on the selection screen and saw "Pixels"!!!
<<<Watch Pixels trailer here>>>

I was just SO excited!!! I just new I was going to get major Mom Bonus Points for this one, because they are at home and not even expecting a movie!!!

So I mosey on home and rock out with my mom music (because I NEVER get to listen to my CD in the truck....it's always the kid's choices playing!) (not that it's awful music or anything...)(just not mine...)

I get home and start hyping up the night we have in store for us with an awesome movie to watch!!! The kids are really getting into it and looking very excited!!

It was then, at that exact moment when I was pulling the totally awesome movie out of my purse, that I noticed what looked like bugs flying around or something on the picture on the disc.    I thought to myself, that looks odd.

On closer inspection of the disc, I realized they were pixies, not bugs.

I had, in fact,  picked up a movie called "Pixies" NOT "Pixels" at the Red Box!!!!!
<<<Watch Pixies trailer here>>>

Big, Huge, EPIC difference here!!!!!

WOOPS!!!!

So, yes, I had an EPIC Mom Fail today.
I am after all, only human, and being awesome ALL the time is exhausting!!!
;-)

Blessings!!!

Gone Fishin'..... no, really!!!

As you may well know, I am not at all the "fishing" type....so this blog is clearly not about me.
My Army Man also is not the fishing type, so this blog is clearly not about him.
(I hear the Sicilian in my mind...you know, Princess Bride??)

If this blog is not about me or my Army Man, then clearly it must be about one of my boys, right?

If you thought that, you would be wrong.

Well, sort of....

You see, I have three delightful, helpful, obedient, wonderfully active children!!  Oh yeah, we have TONS of FUN around here!!!! =)

I have a 14 year old son  that has an almost photographic memory of every book he has ever read (in his entire life!), but balks and clams up at the mention of the word "math"!!

I have 10 year old son that LOVES playing outside and lives for adventure as long as it is safe and everyone is comfortable!!

But I also have a 12 year old, beautiful, musically talented, gentle and kind daughter that LOVES to hunt, fish and take care of "her" chickens!!!

See this blog for her first adventure >>Tru's Adventure << (Be warned, there are photos!)

This is another one of HER adventures!!!!

We sometimes have friends over on Sundays after church and since we live out in the country we ALWAYS advise the children to bring extra clothes....someone always "accidentally" falls into the creek!!!
As it so happens on this Sunday their very favorite friends came over to spend the afternoon with us!! So great adventures are to be had!!!

But first I must tell a small back-story....

My daughter loves hunting. She loves hunting squirrel, skinning, cleaning, cooking and eating them. She asks me almost every day if she can go hunting.

Weird!!! Sometimes I ask myself where this girl came from!!!

Ok, back to Sunday.....

Tru had actually gone hunting the day before and got her squirrel!!! She did her usual thing down at the creek and had squirrel for a snack. Yup!! The next day (Sunday!) she, her big brother and a friend went fishing in our pond.... they were SO excited when they caught a sizable fish.  They ran up and wanted to know if they could cook and eat it!!!

Well, absolutely you can!!!   We do teach that if you kill it you have to eat it!!! =)

I should mention here that they also caught some crawfish (is that what they are called??) (they look like tiny lobsters!!) (Gross!!!) they had started a fire and were boiling them while they were fishing....

This will have been the first time Tru has skinned a fish, so her friend was teaching her how to do it... as she was cleaning the fish to prepare it for cooking she slit it down the bottom and opened it up.

And.....Surprise!!!!

Apparently, the fish they caught had eaten the claw of the squirrel (among some other things!!) Tru had cleaned the day before!!!!! How freakishly weird is that?!?!?!?!!!!

This fish was Hongry!!!!

They did cook and eat this and two other fish on this day!!!
I always say, if something happens, I have a girl that can provide some meat for our table!!! ;-)

It was hilarious to see the kid's faces when they saw this!!!!!   A classic childhood memory that will forever be brought up at family gatherings!!!! =)

But, to cleanse your palate and remove the disturbing images of fish innards.....here are some bee pics!!!
We split our hive last week.....

A worker on my daughter's glove...they are always so interested in what is going on!!!

 Frame with workers!!

 So amazing.....

Old hive....

 New hive!!!
I adore this yellow color!!!
The next split will have a light blue or green!!!!
=)

 Our two hives!!!!  =)

Bees are so very awesome!!!!!

A Walk in the......MUD!!!!!!

Oh yes!!!!
It is sunny and a balmy 62* outside today!!! =)

We just spent an bit of time walking about our property.

These are not the photos from today.....these are from yesterday!!!! The turtle release day!!! And Th. caught a fish in our pond!!! =)

Little Bit

Tater

Today I wanted to check on our turtles we released into our pond yesterday!!! (I have raised these turtles from infancy....they were rescued from someone who was not able to properly care for them!!)  I was so ready for them to be in their natural habitat!! Not to mention that keeping a turtle tank is a timely and costly (and stinky!!) adventure I will never do again!!!! I did love having them though!!! They were fascinating and entertaining to watch (for 3 years!!!!!)!!!

On to today......our walkabout.....it all started out pretty innocently. My kiddos were so amazed that a fish was caught in our pond that they wanted to try again today!!
I am one happy mama! They WANT to go outside and play and fish!!!! THIS is why we are where we are...so they can!!!! =)  =)  Our property has woods, creeks, grass, and a pond!!! Who could ask for more!! (Well, I guess it could be better if it were located in the mountains!!! "The mountains are calling and I must go!"  John Muir) I love where we live and the experiences my kids are getting to have.

But I digress.....as usual!!!

My kiddos were at the pond fishing....not much was happening today. I think the fish wised up to the white shiny thing they were so attracted to yesterday!! My turtles kept popping up their little heads because they could hear us talking!!! Happiness!! They look so tiny out in the pond, but they were quickly outgrowing the 55 gallon tank I had them in!!!

Those dark spots in the water....those are my turtles!!!!! Little Bit and Tater!!! They pop up when they hear me talking!!! SO sweet! ....and bittersweet!!! They will have to learn to live out there on their own!!!

After checking on the turtles we decided to up to the front of this side of our property. Don't know why...just did!
My kids are always looking for adventure so here come the pics of our adventure today!!!

Enjoy!!! =)

The boys are climbing on a tree that my Army Man cut down (it fell across one of our creeks) that made an all natural jungle gym!!!! =)  Happy boys!!!!

Th. has discovered a mushy "sink hole" spot of mud!!! It only went up to his knees!!!

He made it out, but is now trying to get back in!!!

 He is covered in mud!!!!!!

So now everyone must try out the "sink hole"!!!!

Oh yes!!! There they are in the swampiest (snakiest?!?!?!) part of our property!!!

Looks to me like they have on painted mud colored boots!!!! Hahahaha!!!
Mc is the first to climb out of the mire!

Oh the joy of mud!!!

Tr. is a smart girl....she is trying to get out without getting thorns in her feet!!!

So stinkin' cute!!!

Yep! She is a country girl!!!!

Our Bella had muddy feet too, but it is hard to tell!!! ;)

Sweet mercy at the mud these kids find!!!!

To the creek!!!! Get cleaned up before you go back to the house!!!!

This is a little (tiny) section of our creek!!!
Always clear and flowing!!!
I feel very blessed to live here!!!

Well, he tried!!!

Here is a view of our yard and our house we built in 2012!!! Such a blessing and answer to prayer!!!
To the right of the house.....

House and raised bed garden area!!!

To the left of the house..... and our chicken coop! (and future cow/goat pasture area!!)!!

Such a great day to be outside!!!!

Blessings!!!
